Thank you for reaching out. With the emotions involved in friends that have moved far away, this must be a difficult time for you.
Please understand that your sexual orientation isn’t something that someone else can tell you, and it does take time to understand and sort through your feelings to know who you love. Sexual orientation is something we come to learn and understand as time goes on and feelings develop. In the end, you will know your feelings better than anyone.
In terms of your friend, you should consider the best solution for both you and your friend. Six hours is quite a distance, and you have to factor in what your friend thinks of you, what your friend thinks of her girlfriend, how close they are to one another, and the chance of you coming together again. Do you know if she feels the same way about you? How do you think she would react if you told her? If you came out to her, do you feel she would say something to other people you would know?
These are complicated questions, and there may not be an easy answer. Always take your safety, security, and overall well being into any decisions you make about what to do because you know these answers better than anybody. Everyone is different and knowing the answers to these questions will help you decide the best possible option.
You can always write back to us at The Trevor Project whenever you have other questions, and please take advantage of Trevor Space where there are others struggling with the same questions that you are. Please stay in touch.
Cordially yours,
Trevor
