Perhaps the best thing is to actually start up a conversation with Mathias.  Say ‘hi’ and ask a question about some mutual school work or comment on something you think he may find interest in.  Sometimes if you are showing ‘flirty’ signs but not actually communicating, it can make someone uncomfortable and that may seem like they don’t like you.  It is possible that he doesn’t share the same sexual orientation as you do, but even in that case, if you can start a conversation, you may be able to develop a good friendship.
