Answer:

You can’t control other people’s actions—only your own. Be proud of yourself—and if other people make fun of you, that just shows how uncomfortable they are with themselves. If telling people you’re gay seems risky or too difficult, maybe start by putting less effort into pretending you’re straight. People might react better if they figure it out gradually. For other tips, check out the brochure linked to here.

As for your brother—older siblings can be a real pain. Let him know that he’s hurting your feelings—he may not realize it, and think he’s just joking around. If he doesn’t shape up, tell your parents how hard he’s being on you. Family should be there to support you, not bring you down.

Remember that you are worthy of love, respect, and acceptance—and you deserve to be treated the way you want to be treated. If you’re ever feeling like it’s all just too much to handle, remember you can always call 1-866-488-7386 and talk with a Trevor lifeline counselor about what you’re feeling and experiencing.

Good luck, and feel free to write back.
