My daughter is right now in the hospital because (thank goodness) her friends had enough sense to tell someone that she was going to harm herself. My question would be this: as a parent, where can I go to understand better and be more open to her feelings without smothering her at the same time?
Signed,
Carol, 41,

Dear Carol,
I’m glad to hear your daughter’s friends cared enough about her to notify someone who was in a position to help her. If you’ve been reading any of the letters to “Dear Trevor,” you’ve probably figured out by now that the best resource for you would be Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (www.pflag.org). This is a terrific, national organization (there are over 30 chapters in Florida!) that offers support and education to parents like you. Assuming there’s a chapter not far from you, I strongly encourage you to check them out. You’ll have an instant support system that can help you help your daughter through this difficult time.
