Dear Chase,
Coming out can be quite complicated. It is certainly understandable that you want to be just who you are with your family and friends, and in a better world, one without homophobia, this would be the natural course of events. But the world today is often irrationally hostile to gays.
So, coming out needs to be balanced by concern for your personal safety—especially when the kids you are with openly talk about killing gays. To come out in this situation might be foolish and may even lead to your being harmed, shunned and/or subject to ridicule.
However, Chase, there are resources to assist you and—it’s hoped!—help you to link up with other gay teenagers. I strongly recommend that you call the Trevor Helpline (866-488-7386). You will be able to speak with a helpline counselor who can help you figure out if coming out is right for you now, and may also be able to direct you to gay-supportive organizations in your area.
I wish you the best in finding the support you need and should have.
Trevor
