Recently a friend committed suicide for unknown reasons. My boyfriend is having a very hard time dealing with this tragedy. Being a chronically depressed person himself, I am very concerned for his mental and physical health. Are there any specialized grief counselors in the Los Angeles or Orange County area? If so, please contact me as soon as possible with any info.
Hi Tommy,
Dealing with the suicide of a close friend or relative is one of the most difficult and emotionally draining things we can face in life; and it can be just as difficult dealing with someone who is severely depressed. So first, thank you for contacting us and reaching out for help. This is always an important first step.
Contacting a grief counselor is a great way to deal with this, if your boyfriend is willing to do that. The American Association of Suicidology has information about support groups for those who have lost friends to suicide. The Didi Hirsch group also runs a survivor support group. It is also a good idea to be familiar with the warning signs for those contemplating suicide. This is a huge issue for you to be dealing with alone. Try to find friends or family that can help support you through this time. If you don't have that support, remember that we are hear to help you - you never need to be alone.
