Our community of generous and determined supporters made a huge commitment to walk/run/bike/travel 50 miles over the month of April, all to support The Trevor Project’s mission of ending suicide among LGBTQ young people. We are so proud to announce that our community went above and beyond for this challenge, logging over 252,000 miles and raising an incredible $1,313,377 for The Trevor Project.
Over 13,000 individuals came together to accomplish this goal, joining in a Facebook group that became a circle of love and care for LGBTQ young people across the country (and for each other). Throughout the month, members of the group posted stories of resilience, connection, and inspiration as they completed their goals. Many members pledged to walk the 50 miles in honor of The Trevor Project because they are allied adults who believe in a better world for LGBTQ folks; others because they are proud family members of LGBTQ young people; and still others because they are LGBTQ adults themselves, standing in solidarity with their younger community members. One member shared they didn’t walk in honor of anyone in particular; they “just felt it was the right thing to do.”
It is incredibly inspiring that so many people showed up in support of LGBTQ young folks like this. Because of their dedication and compassion, The Trevor Project will continue providing free, confidential, 24/7 suicide prevention and mental health services to LGBTQ young people–services that are a necessary lifeline for so many. These services, along with Trevor’s public education, peer support, research, and advocacy work, help create a safer, more welcoming world for LGBTQ young people. And when our community rallies with us, our mission of ending LGBTQ youth suicide becomes even closer to becoming our reality.
In celebration of Pride this June, and in commemoration of the 51st anniversary of the first ever Pride month on June 27, 1970, we are setting off on a 51 Mile Pride Ride! We can’t wait to see how our community comes together again.
