Schools play a critical role in suicide prevention and intervention efforts for youth in crisis. The Trevor Project volunteers and staff recently conducted a comprehensive review of New York State’s school district suicide prevention policies to determine whether districts have a suicide prevention policy in place, as well as the extent to which existing policies align with best practices of suicide prevention in schools, including language specific to LGBTQ youth.

“Suicide is the second leading cause of death among young people, so it’s important to acknowledge the major role of schools when addressing the public health crisis of suicide — schools are where young people often spend a third of their day,” said Amit Paley, CEO & Executive Director of The Trevor Project. “Highlighting inclusive and comprehensive suicide prevention policies in schools will better equip educators to save young lives.”

The Trevor Project found that over 1/3 of New York school districts do not currently have a suicide prevention policy. Further, we estimate that well over 2 million youth across New York state are enrolled in schools that are not covered by LGBTQ inclusive suicide prevention policies.

The Trevor Project’s research shows that more than half of LGBTQ youth are not out to a single adult in school,” said Keygan Miller, Advocacy Associate for The Trevor Project. “Whether or not LGBTQ youth are out at school, inclusive suicide prevention policies signal that their school is a safe place for them to learn, and that school staff are prepared to support them in times of crisis.”

The Trevor Project Files Amicus Brief at the 4th Circuit Supporting Protections Against Conversion Therapy in Maryland

As 2019 comes to a close, The Trevor Project continues to advocate  for LGBTQ youth in America’s courts. Today we submitted an amicus brief at the 4th Circuit Court of Appeals in the case of Doyle v. Hogan defending Maryland’s law protecting youth from the dangerous and discredited practice of conversion therapy. In this case, Doyle is an infamous conversion therapist based in northern Virginia; Hogan is Governor Hogan, who signed Maryland’s bill protecting the state’s youth into law in 2018. Earlier this year, a federal district court upheld the law as constitutional — we were proud to submit a…
