ENDING LGBTQ YOUTH SUICIDE
But research shows that one supportive person can decrease an LGBTQ youth’s risk of suicide by 30%. Trevor aims to provide that person for LGBTQ young people across the United States.
What We Do
The Trevor Project is the world’s largest and only nationally accredited organization providing crisis intervention and suicide prevention services to LGBTQ youth.
For over 20 years, we have worked to save young lives by providing support through Trevor’s free and confidential crisis services programs, including TrevorLifeline, TrevorChat, and TrevorText. We also run TrevorSpace, the world's largest safe space social networking site for LGBTQ youth, and operate innovative advocacy, research, and education programs across the country.
Why Trevor?
When a young person knows there is a place they can speak with a trustworthy adult, they are much more likely to reach out for help when facing a crisis.
We see how essential LGBTQ-specific services are from an independent evaluation conducted on Trevor’s services by researchers at the University of Southern California. 74% of youth stated that they either would not or were unsure if they would have contacted another service if The Trevor Project did not exist. The review also showed that Trevor’s services are highly effective. Over 90% of respondents sustain de-escalation of their level of crisis even two weeks after intervention.
Yet due to our current capacity, we are serving only 5% of the LGBTQ youth across the country who need our services.
There are over 5 million LGBTQ young people in the United States, and around 1.5 million experience some form of crisis each year that could be served by Trevor’s services. In order to reach these young people, Trevor is undertaking a transformational change. With your support, Trevor will be able to deliver support shaped to the needs of LGBTQ youth on a larger scale than ever before.

2018 ACCOMPLISHMENTS & 2019 GOALS
Trevor is enacting a bold vision to meet the needs of LGBTQ young people in crisis. We aim to close the gap on youth in crisis by scaling up our existing programs where they are needed most, and where young people spend their time — online and on the phone. In order to support this level of growth, Trevor has embarked on a digital transformation that will enable our services to become both more accessible and more efficient.
Crisis Services
TrevorLifeline is at the center of our crisis intervention and suicide prevention services, with 150 volunteers at two call centers, in New York and Los Angeles, reaching young people in crisis 24/7, 365 days a year.
Our fastest-growing department is our digital crisis services team, which works to reach young people on their terms, in their environment, and when support is needed the most. These include TrevorChat and TrevorText.
2018 Accomplishments for TrevorLifeline, TrevorChat, and TrevorText:
- Answered almost 75,000 calls, chats, and texts — a 17% increase from the year before.
- Built a custom online platform that centralizes all crisis services in one place, giving Trevor the ability to collect, track, and analyze text-based data points.
- Expanded TrevorChat and TrevorText to 49 hours per week.
- Maintained high quality, consistent service throughout our highest-demand week ever.
In 2019, our crisis services team:
- Will serve 125,000+ crisis contacts through TrevorLifeline, TrevorChat, and TrevorText.
- Scaled TrevorChat and TrevorText up to 24/7 coverage in order to serve more LGBTQ youth where they are most comfortable.
TrevorSpace
TrevorSpace is the world’s largest safe space social networking site, where LGBTQ young people find peer-to-peer, life-affirming support from users around the world, can join forums around topics that they can’t discuss elsewhere, and find resources. The network’s user-generated posts and messages proactively reduces the isolation experienced by many LGBTQ youth, and the community they find on TrevorSpace works to lessen the risk of depression, isolation, and suicide attempts.
Accomplishments for TrevorSpace over the past year include:
- Offering a safe, affirming online community to 175,000 young people.
- Hiring a full-time product manager, Mani Cavalieri—a former database architect with years of experience as an active member, top user, and moderator on multiple online communities.
- Streamlining the signup process so that youth can join more easily.
In 2019 TrevorSpace will:
- Implement a completely new analytics platform to track the impact of TrevorSpace.
- Reach 250,000 total users participating on TrevorSpace.
- Launch an “Ask Me Anything” program, bringing influencers and experts to TrevorSpace, to share their experiences with users in a safe environment.
- Deepen the connection between TrevorSpace and our crisis services so that TrevorSpace users in crisis can access Lifeline, Chat, and Text as easily as possible.
Education
Trevor’s education team works to create safe spaces for LGBTQ youth in schools and community centers across the country. Our trainings help youth-serving adults and peers of LGBTQ young people identify signs of suicide risk and cultivate safe spaces for the LGBTQ youth. Trevor’s education team is also responsible for training all the volunteers who operate our crisis services.
Accomplishments for Trevor’s education team over the past year:
- Trained nearly 250 volunteers to serve as crisis services counselors.
- Reached 14,000 youth and youth-serving adults through our CARE, Ally, and Lifeguard workshops.
- Launched a first-in-the-nation partnership with the NYC Department of Education to give youth serving adults the tools to teach LGBTQ competent suicide prevention to other teachers and students.
Next year, Trevor’s education team will:
- Train 360 new crisis services volunteers for TrevorLifeline, TrevorChat, and TrevorText.
- Help nearly 16,000 young people and youth-serving adults create safe spaces in schools.
- Upgrade TrevorChat and TrevorText volunteer training curriculum from live webinars led by staff to a self-directed process that trainees can complete in their own time — a crucial step to training enough volunteers for Chat and Text to run 24/7 without compromising learning quality.
Advocacy
Trevor’s Advocacy and Government Affairs team works to educate federal and state agencies and policymakers to advance policies and practices related to LGBTQ youth mental health. This important work contributes to our efforts to reduce the risk of suicide in our target population.
Over the past year, we have added a valuable leader to this team - Sam Brinton, Trevor’s new Head of Advocacy and Government Affairs. Sam is one of the world’s leading advocates for LGBTQ youth. They are a survivor of conversion therapy and have spearheaded efforts to end the practice on minors through their 50 Bills 50 States campaign, which they have brought with them to Trevor.
Accomplishments for Trevor’s advocacy team over the past year include:
- Introduced legislation in 37 states to protect LGBTQ youth from the dangerous practice of conversion therapy, with protections passing in Delaware, Hawaii, Maryland, New Hampshire, New York, and Washington, and enhanced protections passed in the District of Columbia.
- Worked with media organizations to promote best practices in reporting on conversion therapy and its survivors, resulting in appearances on BBC, NBC News, the Seattle Times, USA Today, and many others.
- Released a report showing that laws like California’s successful AB2246 requiring suicide prevention policies in schools can help meet the needs of marginalized students — a crucial tool Trevor can use to advance LGBTQ-inclusive suicide prevention policies in other states.
Next year, our government affairs team will:
- Continue advancing protections against conversion therapy in the remaining 35 states that do not protect young people from the practice.
- Use our rapidly expanding database of suicide prevention policies to promote LGBTQ-affirming suicide prevention curriculum in schools.
- Encourage state officials to adopt best practices for collecting data on the sexual orientation and gender identity of people who experience violent death, allowing Trevor to understand how many LGBTQ youth die by suicide each year and to promote LGBTQ-inclusive policies to address this crisis.
- Educate policymakers and the public about the impact that anti-LGBTQ policies have on the wellness of LGBTQ youth through the sharing of quantitative data and stories from young people who have used Trevor’s services.
- Use our expertise regarding LGBTQ young people to inform the judiciary in key cases with implications for LGBTQ youth wellbeing.
Research
The mission of The Trevor Project’s Research Department is to produce and use innovative research that brings new knowledge and clinical implications to the field of Suicidology and LGBTQ mental health. To address this mission we:
- Advance scientific inquiry by providing empirical data to better understand the lives of LGBTQ youth and suicidality including risk factors and protective factors.
- Support Trevor’s life-saving work by using internal and external data and research findings to advance Trevor’s crisis services and peer support programs as well as advocacy and education initiatives.
- Inform Public Knowledge by ensuring our research and evaluation findings are applicable and widely communicated to the broader public including LGBTQ youth-serving agencies and mental health organizations.
Trevor’s research team has:
- Completed an independent evaluation of Trevor’s services that showed over 90% of youth with suicide risk during their interaction with Trevor were successfully de-escalated and sustained at the one-month follow-up contact.
- Created a national cross-sectional survey of suicidality and mental health that had over 34,000 youth respond, making Trevor’s survey the largest ever of LGBTQ youth.
- Hired Trevor’s first Director of Research, Dr. Amy Green — an academic with over 15 years of experience researching youth mental health and wellness.
Over the next year, Trevor’s research team will:
- Publish the results of our 2018 national survey of LGBTQ youth in peer-reviewed publications.
- Conduct a 2019 national cross-sectional survey to obtain an even deeper understanding of the strengths and needs of LGBTQ youth.
- Use Trevor’s unique access to data on LGBTQ youth to improve our work across the organization — including our crisis services, advocacy, and communications efforts.
- Use our new TrevorSpace analytics to contribute to research on the links between peer support and improved mental well-being for LGBTQ young people.
