The Trump administration shut down the federal suicide prevention lifeline for LGBTQ+ youth one year ago today.

Here’s what’s happened since. One year ago, the federal government shuttered a suicide prevention lifeline that supported more than 1.5 million LGBTQ+ youth in crisis. On July 17, 2025, the Trump administration abruptly terminated the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline’s LGBTQ+ Youth Specialized Services program.
