85% of transgender and nonbinary youth say that recent debates around anti-trans bills have negatively impacted their mental health

February 9, 2022 — The Trevor Project, the world’s largest suicide prevention and crisis intervention organization for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer & questioning (LGBTQ) young people, condemned the Indiana Senate Education Committee for passing HB 1041, which would restrict transgender women and girls from playing on school sports teams that correspond with their gender identity.

“It is unfathomable that, during a historic pandemic and unprecedented isolation for young people, lawmakers in Indiana and across the country would send message after message to transgender youth that they don’t belong,” said Sam Ames (they/them pronouns), Director of Advocacy and Government Affairs at The Trevor Project. “Fairness and inclusion are not mutually exclusive — we can support women’s sports and transgender youth at the same time. But this law, and others like it, aren’t about sports – they’re about politics. Dangerous bills have dangerous consequences. Over 85% of trans and nonbinary youth tell us that recent debates around anti-trans bills like this one have negatively impacted their mental health, and 1 in 3 tell us they are scared. We implore Indiana lawmakers to reject this bill and focus on supporting all youth, not excluding the most marginalized.”

According to a recent poll conducted by Morning Consult on behalf of The Trevor Project, 85% of transgender and nonbinary youth — and two-thirds of all LGBTQ youth (66%) — say recent debates about state laws restricting the rights of transgender people have negatively impacted their mental health. When asked about new policies that would ban transgender girls from playing on girls’ sports teams and transgender boys from playing on boys’ sports teams, 74% of transgender and nonbinary youth said it made them feel angry, 57% felt sad, 43% felt stressed, and nearly 1 in 3 felt scared.

The Trevor Project’s 2021 National Survey on LGBTQ Youth Mental Health found that more than half (52%) of transgender and nonbinary youth seriously considered suicide in the past year, and 1 in 5 attempted suicide. Further, a 2020 peer-reviewed study by The Trevor Project’s researchers, published in the Journal of Adolescent Health, found that transgender and nonbinary youth who report experiencing discrimination based on their gender identity had more than double the odds of attempting suicide in the past year compared to those who did not experience discrimination based on their gender identity.

However, research shows that transgender and nonbinary youth who have access to gender-affirming spaces report lower rates of attempting suicide. A 2021 peer-reviewed study by The Trevor Project’s researchers, published in Transgender Health, also found that transgender and nonbinary youth who reported gender identity acceptance from adults and peers had significantly lower odds of attempting suicide in the past year.

The Trevor Project’s research has also found that a majority of LGBTQ young people (68%) have never participated in sports for a school or community league or club — with many citing fear of bullying and discrimination as a key factor for not participating.

Louisville, KY Protects LGBTQ Youth from Conversion Therapy

Today, September 17th, the City of Louisville passed an ordinance that prohibits licensed medical professionals from subjecting LGBTQ youth to the dangerous and discredited practice of conversion therapy. With this 24 to 1 vote, Louisville becomes the second and largest city in Kentucky to protect LGBTQ youth from conversion therapy — an action that could positively impact the potential of passing statewide legislation in the future. “The Trevor Project is thrilled to see the largest city in Kentucky take action to protect LGBTQ youth from the dangers of conversion therapy. Based on our research, this discredited practice is strongly associated with…

The Trevor Project Files Amicus Brief Supporting Connecticut Policy Protecting Transgender Student-Athlete Rights

The Trevor Project filed an amicus brief this week with the U.S. Second Circuit Court of Appeals in the case of Soule et al v. Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference. Trevor is supporting the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference and multiple school boards that have transgender-inclusive policies. The lawsuit also names two transgender student-athletes who play on girls’ sports teams. Connecticut’s existing policy allows for transgender student-athletes to participate as who they are, providing important opportunities for teamwork, belonging, and physical and mental health benefits.  The “friend-of-the-court” brief provides the Court and the public with The Trevor Project’s unique insights into positive…
