makes a tremendous difference.
Thanks to supporters like you, The Trevor Project can help LGBTQ+ young people navigate some of their most difficult moments.
In this Fall Impact Report, you will see the ways your support has enabled LGBTQ+ young people to find empowerment in themselves and for adult allies to foster accepting spaces.
Your support ensures Trevor’s trained crisis counselors can be there for LGBTQ+ young people whenever needed. The Trevor Project’s free, secure crisis counseling continues to be the core of our life-saving services. For many of the young people who turn to Trevor, our crisis counselors are the first or only accepting adults in their lives.
★ We rolled out a software to reduce wait times across crisis lines. Genesys is a new tool that helps counselors manage their crisis contacts and it is expected to lower wait times by as much as one minute, which is incredibly important because in moments of crisis, every second counts.
★ After two years of a successful partnership, Trevor renewed a contract with 988 to continue supporting LGBTQ+ youth who call into the national mental health crisis line. We look forward to serving again as the primary provider in a network of organizations serving LGBTQ+ young people in the year ahead.
★ Over 1,300 incredible individuals completed more than 150,000 volunteer hours last year. Trevor’s recruitment and training teams engaged more volunteers to make sure we could keep up with the growing need for our crisis counseling support.
Tyler (he/him) grew up in a conservative, religious household in West Virginia where he found meaning in his family and his church. When Tyler started to come to terms with his gay identity, he was isolated from his community and he internalized the pain. As Tyler describes it, “self-hatred started bearing me down…and I genuinely didn’ t want to continue with life any longer.” Tyler reached out to The Trevor Project, where he found support from counselors. These conversations made a big impact. In his own words, “The Trevor Project saved my life.” With Trevor’s support and his mother’s unwavering love, Tyler came out and became an advocate for LGBTQ+ equality, firstly as a high school organizer and now as an intern on Capitol Hill. Tyler’s story is one example of the young people impacted by your generosity.
Your generosity enables Trevor’s advocacy team to use the law to support LGBTQ+ young people. In the most recent legislative cycle, lawmakers proposed a record number of anti-LGBTQ+ bills. Thanks to your support and Trevor’s advocacy work, we defeated 571 of the 604 bills before they could become law.
Your donations enabled us to promote laws that safeguarded rights and protections for the young people we serve. This year, we partnered with lawmakers and regional advocacy groups to enact 19 pro-LGBTQ+ bills across the nation. Examples of the affirming legislation made possible by Trevor’s community included shield laws to ensure transgender youth have access to the healthcare they need and executive orders to ban conversion
As the election nears and politics continue to feel more divisive, Trevor’s advocacy work becomes even more important. Thanks to your partnership, Trevor can continue to advocate for LGBTQ+ young people and their well-being.
Fueled by your support, Trevor empowers educators to be informed, caring allies for LGBTQ+ young people. Your donation invests in crisis intervention services for LGBTQ+ youth in need today and in suicide prevention programs that ensure fewer LGBTQ+ young people face life-threatening crises tomorrow.
Thanks to your generosity, Trevor was able to hold more trainings and workshops last year than in any year prior. Their sessions covered topics that help adult allies support the LGBTQ+ young people in their lives, including an Ally Training that discussed LGBTQ+ identity and terminology, and a CARE Training on how to identify and respond to suicidal ideation.
By giving educators and providers the tools to be the best allies they can be, we are making schools and communities across the nation safer for LGBTQ+ young people. Schools play such an essential role in the development of young people. Together we’re giving educators the resources and training needed to foster welcoming and inclusive environments.
Your continued support of The Trevor Project is an act of allyship that will build a world where LGBTQ+ young people can live authentically and unapologetically, everywhere.
