Research shows that access to transgender health care is associated with significantly lower rates of depression and suicide risk among transgender and nonbinary young people August 11, 2026 – The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services released a new rule that, if allowed to take effect, would restrict access to best-practice health care for transgender and nonbinary young people beginning in October 2026. The Trump administration shut down the federal suicide prevention lifeline for LGBTQ+ youth one year ago today.
Here’s what’s happened since. One year ago, the federal government shuttered a suicide prevention lifeline that supported more than 1.5 million LGBTQ+ youth in crisis. On July 17, 2025, the Trump administration abruptly terminated the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline’s LGBTQ+ Youth Specialized Services program. Up until that point, LGBTQ+ young people under the age of 25 had the option of contacting the 988 Lifeline – our country’s federal suicide prevention hotline – and “pressing three,” “texting PRIDE,” or connecting via online chat to a counselor who was specially trained in supporting LGBTQ+ youth through crisis.
