This month, we’re proud to spotlight Crisis Services Senior Digital Supervisor and Black@Trevor member Nty R. Diakite (she/her). As one of The Trevor Project’s pioneering Affinity Groups, Black@Trevor leads with a mission to create spaces and resources for employees who identify within the Black Diaspora (and their allies) to connect, grow relationships, and build community.

Best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

“People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.”

It’s a Maya Angelou quote but ever since I’ve read it, it’s stuck with me because I live my life with that in mind.

What brought you to Trevor?

I have always been in the mental health field so when I worked at a crisis line & learned about The Trevor Project, I was amazed that I didn’t know about it sooner! The more I learned about it, the more I loved Trevor and I wanted to be apart of the amazing organization directly helping LGBTQ youth. 

I thought I missed out on being apart of Trevor when I moved to LA. It’s interesting because I was randomly walking on Santa Monica Blvd. and saw the Trevor logo and immediately knew it was a sign to apply. That was over 3 years ago!

What’s your favorite thing about working at Trevor?

My favorite thing about working at Trevor is the amazing people I’ve been able to work with. It is such a refreshing feeling to be yourself and not feel judged. Working with people who welcome that authenticity is is irreplaceable. This is actually the FIRST job that I don’t feel the need to code-switch. 

What’s one of your favorite accomplishments with Trevor?

It’s so hard to pick 1 thing! My favorite accomplishment has definitely been being apart of the inaugural Black at Trevor planning committee. Honorable mention is when I was able to co-lead the Black History Month Lunch & learn with Amit and our amazing panelists.

What do you like to do outside of Trevor?

I love to travel and explore different cities through art, food, and architecture. Music is a huge part of my life so I enjoy going to a dance studio with my friends and coming up with some choreography.

The Importance of Safe Language On Social Media

As a suicide prevention organization for LGBTQ+ young people, The Trevor Project regularly sees unsafe language that many use on social media without consideration for others’ mental health. Whether targeting our organization, the LGBTQ+ young people we serve, or the judges, government officials, advocates, and supporters who work with us, there is an urgent need for social media platforms and their users to take action to protect the safety of our community.
