Growing up in a conservative, church-going household in West Virginia,Tyler found meaning in his family and his church. When Tyler started to come to terms with his gay identity, he started to become isolated from his community. Tyler reached out to The Trevor Project, where he found support and encouragement from counselors. Encouraged by his mom’s unwavering love, Tyler came out to his community and became an advocate for LGBTQ+ equality, eventually moving to New York and becoming a high school organizer and now as an intern on Capitol Hill.

In Defense Of Saying Gay/Trans

Last week, we saw the passage of HB 1557, also known as the “Don’t Say Gay/Trans” bill, by the Florida state Senate. This bill will ban classroom instruction on sexual orientation and gender identity in schools, and appears to threaten LGBTQ support in schools and includes vague parental notification requirements which could effectively “out” students to their families without their consent. This bill, which has passed at every level of the Florida state legislature, now awaits the governor’s final decision before being signed into law. Honoring Asher: A Family’s 25-Year Commitment to LGBTQ+ Youth

Lisa Kleinman and her family are generous supporters of The Trevor Project’s mission. Lisa experienced the tragic loss of her nephew, Asher, who would be turning 24 this year on August 12.  Following Asher’s passing, Lisa and her family made a 25-year commitment to honor Asher’s memory through their peer-to-peer campaign to help The Trevor Project support LGBTQ+ youth in crisis.
