Being part of the team is a game-changer for LGBTQ athletes. Self-esteem, health benefits, community; these are just some of the benefits young people get from sports. Yet, many LGBTQ young people are being sidelined — intentionally excluded from those rewarding experiences.  68% of LGBTQ young people have never participated in sports, with many citing fear of bullying and discrimination. The Trevor Project's research estimates that at least one LGBTQ+ young person between the ages of 13 and 24 attempts suicide every 45 seconds in the U.S. Currently, about 45% of the youth we serve across our crisis services are youth of color, and we know from our 2022 National Survey on LGBTQ+ Youth Mental Health that many LGBTQ+ young people of color would benefit from increased access to culturally competent mental health support.
